In 1783, the Mexico City mint struck pieces of 8 bearing the likeness of King Carolus III. Virtually the entire mintage issue was loaded on the El Cazador to be transported to New Orleans. On Jan. 11, 1784, the ship was caught in a hurricane and sank in the Gulf of Mexico. On Aug. 2, 1993, a fisherman caught his net on the wreckage, and the lost coins of the El Cazador were recovered.
